WOW 2011 Schedule


Wed., Sept. 14

WOW Booth   8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

UU Plaza
The WOW Booth will be set up and staffed to answer any and all questions during the Week. If any scheduling changes need to occur, a WOWie needs to find their group, or anything else that has to do with our programming, the WOW Booth is there to assist and help all involved have a smooth WOW experience.

For those who are not yet signed up for WOW or for those who are signed up and have yet to check in, they can do so at the WOW Booth, which will be located in the UU Plaza.

WOW Kick-Off (Session 1)   2:30 p.m.

Mott Gym to O'Neill Green
New students will be introduced to Cal Poly in a rally-like setting. They will hear from special guest speaker Paul Wesselmann and then meet their WOW groups, with whom they will spend the rest of the week.

Lower Sports Complex
This is the Central Coast's largest get-to-know-you social. Thousands of students will mingle as they play games and interact with one another. This event is great to watch, whether you are in the midst of the action or observing from afar. Picture thousands of people moving and shaking, dancing and jumping, yelling and screaming! The event will be emceed by special guest and Cal Poly WOW alumnus Frank Warren.

WOW Community Service (Scheduled by WOW Group)

Various Locations throughout SLO County
Thursday begins the first of the days of community service. WOW groups will volunteer at various locations throughout San Luis Obispo County. The day will provide students with a way to give back to the community that they will be living in during their college career.

Awareness Gallery   9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

University Art Gallery - Dexter Bulding
There will be 3-4 groups every 15 minutes, one hour total. This week-long interactive presentation promotes self-discovery by providing resources and information on topics and issues presented throughout the program.

Awareness Presentation – Personal Choice and Struggles
9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m.

PAC – Harman Hall
Students will view an impactful and eye-opening video that embraces the consequences of alcohol and drug abuse and addiction to relay the importance and seriousness of these issues around a college campus. There will also be a moving skit and a touching montage, which expresses the issues of suicide and depression.

Awareness Presentation – Drunk Sex or Date Rape, Can You Tell the Difference
9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m.

Chumash Auditorium, and a live stream into Spanos Theatre
Interactive program for students. The standard program is a blend of information-based and risk reduction approaches, with the goal of attitudinal shifting, but not primary prevention. Shifting attitudes in critical, and can help to lay the informational foundation for true prevention. Programs like this build allies, encourage reporting, and enhance victim self-identification. IFC Tournament: Dodgeball (Optional Event)   4:00 p.m.

Upper Sports Complex Fields
Groups will compete in a bracket and will vie for bragging-rights in The Week of Welcome WOW Group Dodgeball Tournament Champions.

Bruce McDonald – Hypnotist (Optional Event)   8:00 p.m.

University Union – Chumash Auditorium
Come enjoy a fun and comedic show and find out what getting hypnotized is all about. The astounding Bruce McDonald is back as our hypnotist. He has been here many times in the past and always puts on a magnificent show!

Fremont Movie Night Downtown (Optional Event)   7:00 p.m., 9:00 p.m.

Fremont Movie Theater
WOW is headed to the Fremont Movie Theatre, where a movie will be lighting up the big-screen in the 880-seat theater.

Bike Night: Cal Poly (Optional Event)   10:00 p.m.

Meet @ Performing Arts Center Circle and ride to Dexter Lawn
Students will have a chance to participate in the second annual Cal Poly Bike Night, where they will ride their bikes in a circuit around campus as part of an exciting event! Groups will dress up as their group theme!

PAC – Harman Hall and Chumash Auditorium
The new students will attend a presentation promoting respectful relationships between the San Luis Obispo community and Cal Poly's campus community. The panel will give students a chance to interact with community members, representatives from both University Police and San Luis Obispo Police, as well as the Empower Cal Poly Coalition.

SLO Bound 2011   11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Downtown San Luis Obispo
Students experience a unique introduction to the San Luis Obispo community by taking a leisurely stroll downtown and visiting participating businesses throughout San Luis Obispo. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about local restaurants, shops, resources, landmarks, and the history of San Luis Obispo.

Minute to Win It (Optional Event)   9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m.

Mott Lawn
Based off of the hit TV show, Minute to Win It, WOW Groups will have the chance to bond by competing amongst each other and against other groups by performing the silliest of tasks in under sixty seconds.

A new event this year, WOW groups will have the option of attending our dance at the extravagant Madonna Expo Center. SLO DJ will be providing us with their newest, most exciting mixes and an extraordinary light show.

The closure to the Awareness presentations during the week. This presentation establishes respect and understanding of diversity on the Cal Poly campus and in the SLO community. This allows the students the opportunity to reflect about their choices and encourages them to make the best of their experience at Cal Poly.

With every beginning there comes an end … an unforgettable experience! WOW Board 2011 will share inspirational words, motivational stories and an everlasting message for WOWies and OLs to start the academic year off right.

This presentation will focus on addressing both incoming and continuing Cal Poly Students. It will emphasize the responsibilities that come with being a part of the Cal Poly family and our commitment to community.

Club Showcase & Outdoor Concert   1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

H-16 Parking Lot
More than 200 student-run clubs and organizations join forces with New Student Programs and ASI to take over the H-16 Parking Lot. With PK performing from the stage, students will be able to walk around hear what the clubs and organizations have to offer, providing opportunities to get involved on campus and in the community.
