Orientation for United Raza (O.U.R.)
Orientation for United Raza is a program conceived by Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan. (M.E.X.A.) students as a supplemental orientation program working in conjunction with WOW. O.U.R. works primarily to orient minority students' transition from high school to college. It is a difficult process, especially for people of color whom face diversity issues at Cal Poly. O.U.R. provides guidance for such students all while having fun. The price of OUR is only $85 for students with a meal plan and $100 for those who don't, which includes meals, transportation, and cost of any other activities. "Hi my name is Ricardo Higareda, and I am now a second-year Mechanical Engineering student. Last year I participated in OUR and it, by far, has been the best event that I have participated in. I was introduced to OUR by some of the members of MEXA during SOAR. I was a bit scared and anxious to meet these new people, but after the first ice breaker everyone felt more comfortable with each other and the bonding between everyone began. The whole week was a lot of fun. I got to make great friends, including a girl friend, and I also found a new family in SLO. At the time I was a bit homesick, but the members of MEXA and OUR were very welcoming and we all bonded like a family. I feel that the friends that I met in OUR will be the friends that I keep for life. OUR is like a Familia that accepts the new members every year because it is small, more personal, and more tailored to the needs of minority students. Orientation for United Raza es un programa promovido por Movimiento Estudiantil Xicano de Aztlan (M.E.X.A.) como un programa de orientacion alternative trabajando en union con WOW. O.U.R. principalmente trabaja para orientar estudiantes Latinos/Chicanos en su transicion de la preparatoria a la Universidad. Es un proceso dificil, especialmente para estudiantes de color quienes encaran los problemas de diversidad en Cal Poly. O.U.R. ayuda guiar a estos estudiantes, y al mismo tiempo se divierten. El costo para atender O.U.R. es solamente $85 por los estudiantes que tienen el Plan de Comida de Cal Poly, y $100 por los de mas, el cual incluye comida, transportacion, y otras actividades. "Hola, mi nombre es Ricardo Higareda, y estoy en mi segundo año estudiando Ingieneria Mecanica. El año pasado participe en O.U.R. y fue, hasta hoy, el major evento en el que he participado. Fui introducido a O.U.R., durante SOAR, por unos miembros de M.E.X.A. Estaba un poco asustado y ansioso de conocer a estas nuevas personas, pero después de la primera actividad todos se sintieron más cómodo uno con el otro y la amistad entre todos empezo. La semana entera fue muy divertida. Pude hacer unos gran amigos, inclusive una novia, y también encontré una nueva familia en SLO. En aquel momento estuve un poco nostálgico, pero los miembros de M.E.X.A. y O.U.R fueron muy bienvenidos y todos nos juntamos como una familia. Siento que los amigos que hice en O.U.R. serán los amigos que mantendre por vida. O.U.R es como una familia que acepta a los nuevos miembros todos los años porque es pequeña, más personal, y mas hecha para las necesidades de estudiantes minoritarios.
