What Next? What's Next

Before you come to Cal Poly… Before you come to Cal Poly

Things to take care of: Things to take Care Of

  • Check on your living arrangements:
    • If you are going to live on campus, confirm your residence hall assignment and check the move-in procedures for parking and unloading during the weekend by calling the Week of Welcome Hotline at (805) 756-2764.
    • If you are going to live off campus, make sure your arrangements are made for your overnight accomodations. WOW does not include accommodations for students.
  • Contact your roommate(s) to find out what their plan is for The Week so you can coordinate schedules. It is also a good idea to figure out what each of you should bring before you get here (e.g. TV, VCR, refrigerator).
  • A tentative schedule is included to help you plan when you would like to come to Cal Poly. Check the schedule to make sure you are able to get everything done during the weekend.
  • You will notice a flexible schedule for the weekend. This is to allow you time to move in, check in for orientation, and take care of other essentials before school starts. We suggest students get a PolyCard, purchase textbooks, and meet roommate(s) and neighbors.

Make sure you know how to get to Cal Poly: Make Sure You Know How to Get to Cal Poly

  • Cal Poly is just off the Grand Avenue exit of Highway 101 and there are several signs to show you the way to the campus.
  • You do not need a parking permit to park on campus from 5 pm on Friday until 7 am on Monday, but all regular parking violations will be enforced. Starting Monday, September 14, at 7 am, parking permits will be required. They can be bought throughout the weekend at the State Cashier's Office in the Administration Building.
  • Keep in mind there will be a lot of new people coming to the campus who are unsure of where to go. Come with a lot of patience and understanding to help make your stay more enjoyable.

When You Arrive Here... When You Arrive Here

Get settled into your new place:

  • If you are moving into off-campus housing, feel free to go there first to get settled in before you come to campus.
  • If you are moving into on-campus housing, follow the directions to the appropriate residence hall provided by Housing, park your car, and check in to the hall. You may have to wait in line for a while before you actually get to see your room and you will want to do a room check before you start bringing in your things.

Check in for New Students Attending WOW:

  • WOW check-in will be located on Mott Lawn Sunday, September 13 from 12 p.m. - 7p.m., Monday, Sept 14 from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Tuesday Sept 15 from 7 a.m. - 9 a.m. We highly recommend you check in no later than 7 p.m. on Monday night, as your first event starts on Tuesday at 9 a.m. with College Connections. However, late check-in will continue throughout The Week.
  • At check-in you will receive your WOW group assignment, a packet of information for The Week, and meal plan information.

Note: During the Week of Welcome, new students will be asked by their Orientation Leaders to pay up to an additional $25. This additional payment is NOT covered in the WOW Student Fee, so please keep this in mind when making your WOW reservations. This extra money will be used for excursions such as kayaking, hot tubbing, eating off-campus, reimbursement for gas, etc. These activities provide an additional way for students to orient themselves with the community and bond with the other members of their WOW groups. These additional group activities are optional and new students do not have to participate if they do not wish to do so.

The Week of Welcome staff is committed to ensuring the best orientation experience possible for new students and their families. If, at any point or for any reason, you have a question and need to talk to someone about your WOW experience during the Week of Welcome program, please contact your Orientation Leaders, your RA or your housing Hall Director. If you have problems contacting one of these individuals, feel free to contact Andrene Kaiwi-Lenting, Director of Orientation Programs, instead at 805.756.2476 or akaiwile@calpoly.edu.
