Orientation Leaders: Orientation Options
Cal Poly Week of Welcome (WOW) 50 Years of Excellence: 1957-2007, Family Orientation Weekend: September 8 & 9, 2007, New Student Orientation: September 10 - 14, 2007
Orientation Leader – Grouping Options
A leader has the option to decide lead a group in the fall with a co-leader in one of the following grouping options. If leading a group is not the preference, perhaps she/he may need a more flexible schedule during the Week, orientation leaders may opt to become Event Staff.

FYC – First Year Connection
FYC groups consist of first year students that live in the same residence hall, Yosemite or Sierra Madre. As an FYC group leader, you will help facilitate a smooth transition for all aspects of the students' life. These aspects include living arrangements, academics, social life, etc. We expect FYC group leaders to stay actively involved in the students' lives for at least the first quarter after WOW. It is also an expectation that FYC leaders work closely with the RA of their groups tower, following housing policy in addition to WOW policies.

Transfer Groups
Transfer students generally will socialize better from the beginning, because they have already experienced the college life. Many have already lived away from home and tend to be comfortable with the move to Cal Poly. Generally, you need fewer icebreakers because your group may enjoy participating in more team building exercises rather than icebreakers. Be flexible and open to what your group requests. Most transfer students have a slightly different focus.

No Preference Groups
No Preference groups have a mix of students. The No Preference groups will be made up of freshmen and transfer students from the redbrick residence halls and off-campus students. These groups are randomly placed at the time of WOW check-in.

Event Staff
WOW Event Staff is the group of leaders who help run the behind-the-scenes aspects of the week. They have versatile roles during WOW and aren’t required to be with a group the entire day. This allows for more flexibility of hours and level of responsibility depending on the needs and wants of the Event Staff member. Event Staff members usually work at the WOW Booth during the week. Event Staff also handles WOWie registration, daily location sheet processing, and giving information to lost WOWies. They help with the setup and takedown of events such as the barbecue and recreation center showcase. An added perk of being an Event Staff member is that a group can host them during the The Week. If a WOW group needs an extra driver to help take new students to an event, they can take an Event Staff member to help them drive and they get to participate in the event.
