Nationally, AmeriCorps is known as the domestic Peace Corps and provides a huge array of services to those in need. The Central Coast Volunteer Corps was created in 2007 and had 29 members at 22 local agencies in it’s first year. The program will be increasing in size for 2008. Members serve at local non-profits helping to expand agency programs and participate in multi-agency collaborative service projects.
Any local non-profit or public service agency is welcome to apply to host an AmeriCorps member. Agencies will be selected based on current need and compatibility of the position they are wanting to create. All hosting agencies will be required to pay a cash match of $5,000 for half-time positions and $10,000 for full-time. All other employment costs are covered by the Central Coast Volunteers Corps.
All positions are either half-time (900 hours per year) or full time (1700 hours per year) and vary from agency to agency. The positions focus on building the capacity of the agency through tasks such as event coordination, volunteer recruitment and management, fundraising, and grant writing. AmeriCorps is not a job, it is a paid service experience. All positions pay a living allowance throughout the term of service and an educational award upon completion.
