Everyone can participate! Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, Make a Difference Day is an annual event that takes place on the
fourth Saturday of every October. Millions have participated all over the country. Anyone can carry out a volunteer project that
helps others, it might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon
helping an elderly neighbor or relative. In 2008, three million people supported their communities by volunteering and accomplishing thousands of projects all over the nation.
Make a Difference Day is recognized nationally and organized locally by The Community
CENTER at Cal Poly and co-sponsored by United Way of San Luis Obispo County. It is one
of San Luis Obispo County’s largest single-day volunteer events. Participants will be
placed at different non-profit agencies throughout the County
to help with projects ranging from gardening and painting to special events and fundraisers.
Last year, more than 25 Make a Difference Day projects were scheduled with organizations such as the Boys &
Girls Club of North San Luis Obispo County, United Cerebral Palsy, the Land Conservancy of SLO County, Woods
Humane Society, SLO Botanical Garden, American Red Cross, and the Food Bank Coalition of SLO County, among
many others. More than 400 community members and college students from all over the county participated in
the event as volunteers.
